Head of the Potomac - Fall 2010
The Crew Team's Fall racing season opened Sunday at the "Scullers Head of The Potomac", a beautiful 2.8-mile course down the Potomac River, beginning at Fletcher's Cove and ending at the Roosevelt Bridge. Unlike the Spring Sprints, when our Barons compete in 1500 meter races against other high schools, the fall "Head Races" are crew's equivalent of a cross-country race, requiring remarkable endurance, and pitting our crews against highly competitive composite club boats of top area rowers—not just single high schools.
Thanks to lovely conditions and six very strong Varsity boats (3 Men's eights and 3 Women's eights), rowing fans were treated to a lovely afternoon of racing and cheering, as the men took a spectacular 2nd, 12th, and 18th place finishes in a highly competitive field of 24 boats; and the women took 7th, 13th and 18th in a field of 24 as well.
In the First Men's Varsity 8 were: Matt Speck (cox), Nick van der Vink (stroke), Greg Mariuzza, Harry Holroyd, Sam Weiner, Matt Dutko, Michael Colella, Erik Holmvik, & Sam Murphy.
