Sculler's Head of the Potomac 2011
The Fall racing season is off to a great start, with a terrific coaching staff and 57 athletes all working hard to build a strong varsity team. This past Sunday the Barons raced in the Head of the Potomac (which currently looks more like the mighty muddy Mississippi!). Unlike the Spring Sprints, when our Barons compete in 1500 meter races against other high schools, the fall "Head Races" are much longer (2.8 miles in this case), with many top rowing clubs competing as well. Most of B-CC's boats were "mixed," incorporating less experienced rowers in with the more experienced, an important training and team-building strategy designed to help the younger rowers and the entire team get stronger and faster.
In the men's youth category, the Barons had one eight of all upperclassmen that finished an impressive 2nd out of 15 boats. In this boat were: Caelan Collins (cox), Erik Holmvik, Michael Colella, Matt Dutko, Sam Weiner, Shray Mittal, Nate Hodge, Rohan Mittal, and Sam Murphy. In the first of two mixed boats were: Zena Wolf (cox), Adam Schlesinger, Joaquin Rodriguez, Aidan LaPierre, Nolan Petty, Mitchell Broadwater, Peter Murphy, Srikanta Mehta, and Mishel Kisi. In the second: Nico Judge (cox), Joel Rosenblum, Ian Weaver, Matt Baer, Jeremy Lartigue, Trevor Wind, David Loungani, Diego Wahl, and Theo Montgomery. These two boats came in 10th and 13th.
In the women's youth category, the Barons rowed in both eights and fours. There were three mixed boats of eight. In the first were: Emma Dauster (cox), Lizzie Hook, Abby McIntosh, Sophie Rosenthal, Julia Vasquez, Vivian Vasquez, Lexi Theiss, Sara Katsnelson, and Natalie Rogers. In the second mixed eight were: Phoebe Mejia (cox), Naomi Balodemas, Charlotte Myers, Ruby Smith, Sabina Gudmundsson, Gyl Weisenfeld, Molly Gibson, Rachel Dick, and Caitlin Beakes. In the third eight were: Julia Maslin (cox), Margaux Carle, Erin Walk, Tamsin Bradbury, Vanny Stepney, Taylor Joseph, Katherine Smith, Jacqueline Whitford, and India Scribner. These three boats came in 11th, 14th & 15th.
The two women's fours raced well, especially considering that 6 of the 8 rowers had already raced earlier in the day. They come in 3rd and 5th out of 10 boats. In the first four were; Zena Wolf (cox), Katie Sampson, Charlotte Myers, Sofia Arend, and Lizzie Hook. In the second four were: Maddy Turner (cox), India Scribner, Abby McIntosh, Erin Walk, and Margaux Carle.
Keep up the great teamwork Barons!
