Occoquan Chase 2011

The Occoquan Chase looked more like Occoquanapalooza this year, with traffic back-ups and over-filled parking lots as 366 boats and countless cars descended on Sandy Run Regional Park for another spectacular sunny autumn day of head racing this past sunday. The men's first varsity eight enjoyed another great first-place finish, coming in with a time that was faster than all but one of the college boats' times. The women's varsity eight also finished with a very fast time, coming in an impressive fourth out 28 boats in a race against some extremely competive junior club teams.

In B-CCs winning junior men's eight were: Caelan Collins (cox), Erik Holmvik, Michael Colella, Matt Dutko, Sam Weiner, Shray Mittal, Nate Hodge, Adam Schlesinger, and Sam Murphy. In the women's first eight were: Zena Wolf (cox), Katie Sampson, Lizzie Hook, Sofia Arend, Erin Walk, Abby McIntosh, Charlotte Myers, Naomi Balodemas, and Margaux Carle.

The women's varsity four also raced very well, especially considering that three of the rowers had already raced earlier that morning in an eight. Coming in 9th out of 25 boats were: Maddy Turner (cox), Julia Vasquez, India Scribner, Ruby Smith, and Gyl Weisenfeld.

In the very strong second men's eight were: Nico Judge (cox), Rohan Mittal, Joaquin Rodriguez, , Ian Weaver, Trevor Wind, Joel Rosenblum, David Lougani, Diego Wahl, and Peter Murphy. This boat finished 14th out of 29 boats.

In the women's second eight were: Emma Dauster(cox), Sabina Gudmundsson, Molly Gibson, Katherine Smith, Julia Vasquez, Vanny Stepney, Tamsin Bradbury, India Scribner, and Taylor Joseph. Occoquan Challenge 2011

It was Indian summer at the Occoquan Reservoir last Sunday, and the B-CC crew fans were basking in the sunshine and in glorious racing. The men's first eight won a first place trophy and the women's first eight won 2nd place! The men had won this race in 2009 and came in a close second in 2010. The women have never had this strong a showing in this regatta, the next highest place finish being last year's fourth. The "Challenge" is a unique 5K course in that boats start and finish at the same location and complete a wide quarter mile 180-degree turn at the midway point.
Coming in a whopping 25 seconds ahead of the next fastest boat was B-CC"s winning junior men's eight: Caelan Collins (cox), Erik Holmvik, Michael Colella, Matt Dutko, Sam Weiner, Shray Mittal, Nate Hodge, Adam Schlesinger, and Sam Murphy.
In the women's first eight, coming in only 5.65 seconds behind the first place boat were: Zena Wolf (cox), Katie Sampson, Lizzie Hook, Sofia Arend, Erin Walk, Abby McIntosh, Charlotte Myers, Naomi Balodemas, and Margaux Carle.
In second men's eight were: Nico Judge (cox), Joel Rosenblum, Joaquin Rodriguez, Rohan Mittal, Trevor Wind, Ian Weaver, Matt Baer, Jeremy Lartigue, and Peter Murphy. This boat finished 6th out of 14 boats. In the third eight, coming in 11th place were: Julia Maslin (cox), Mitchell Broadwater, Mishel Kisi, Aidan LaPierre, David Lougani, Diego Wahl, Nolan Petty, Srikanta Mehta, and Theo Montgomery.
In the women's second eight were: Maddy Turner (cox), Sabina Gudmundsson, Molly Gibson, Katherine Smith, Julia Vasquez, Vanny Stepney, Tamsin Bradbury, Sophie Rosenthal, and Taylor Joseph. This boat finished 8th out of 11. In the third eight, in 11th place, were: Phoebe Mejia (cox), Rachel Dick, Lexi Theiss, Emma Dauster, Natalie Rogers, Vivian Vasquez, Caitlin Beakes, Sara Katsnelson, and Jacqueline Whitford.
The women's team also had a powerful four that came in 6th out of 10 boats. In this boat were: Julia Masin (cox), Gyl Weisenfeld, Ruby Smith, India Scribner, and Julia Vasquez.
Our mighty rowing Barons will be heading to this Occoquan venue again this coming Sunday, October 176h for the Occoquan Chase. Come out and enjoy this scenic and exciting racecourse while cheering on our team!

Sculler's Head of the Potomac 2011

The Fall racing season is off to a great start, with a terrific coaching staff and 57 athletes all working hard to build a strong varsity team. This past Sunday the Barons raced in the Head of the Potomac (which currently looks more like the mighty muddy Mississippi!). Unlike the Spring Sprints, when our Barons compete in 1500 meter races against other high schools, the fall "Head Races" are much longer (2.8 miles in this case), with many top rowing clubs competing as well. Most of B-CC's boats were "mixed," incorporating less experienced rowers in with the more experienced, an important training and team-building strategy designed to help the younger rowers and the entire team get stronger and faster.

In the men's youth category, the Barons had one eight of all upperclassmen that finished an impressive 2nd out of 15 boats. In this boat were: Caelan Collins (cox), Erik Holmvik, Michael Colella, Matt Dutko, Sam Weiner, Shray Mittal, Nate Hodge, Rohan Mittal, and Sam Murphy. In the first of two mixed boats were: Zena Wolf (cox), Adam Schlesinger, Joaquin Rodriguez, Aidan LaPierre, Nolan Petty, Mitchell Broadwater, Peter Murphy, Srikanta Mehta, and Mishel Kisi. In the second: Nico Judge (cox), Joel Rosenblum, Ian Weaver, Matt Baer, Jeremy Lartigue, Trevor Wind, David Loungani, Diego Wahl, and Theo Montgomery. These two boats came in 10th and 13th.

In the women's youth category, the Barons rowed in both eights and fours. There were three mixed boats of eight. In the first were: Emma Dauster (cox), Lizzie Hook, Abby McIntosh, Sophie Rosenthal, Julia Vasquez, Vivian Vasquez, Lexi Theiss, Sara Katsnelson, and Natalie Rogers. In the second mixed eight were: Phoebe Mejia (cox), Naomi Balodemas, Charlotte Myers, Ruby Smith, Sabina Gudmundsson, Gyl Weisenfeld, Molly Gibson, Rachel Dick, and Caitlin Beakes. In the third eight were: Julia Maslin (cox), Margaux Carle, Erin Walk, Tamsin Bradbury, Vanny Stepney, Taylor Joseph, Katherine Smith, Jacqueline Whitford, and India Scribner. These three boats came in 11th, 14th & 15th.

The two women's fours raced well, especially considering that 6 of the 8 rowers had already raced earlier in the day. They come in 3rd and 5th out of 10 boats. In the first four were; Zena Wolf (cox), Katie Sampson, Charlotte Myers, Sofia Arend, and Lizzie Hook. In the second four were: Maddy Turner (cox), India Scribner, Abby McIntosh, Erin Walk, and Margaux Carle.

Keep up the great teamwork Barons!

Stotesbury 2011

Stotesbury 2011 Established in 1926 by Philadelphia industrialist, philanthropist & rowing enthusiast, Edward T. Stotesbury, the Stotesbury Cup Regatta is the world's oldest and largest high school rowing competition, and the second largest regatta in the United States. Last weekend, B-CC's rowing Barons joined 5,000 rowers, and some 20,000 fans on the banks of Philadelphia's Schuylkill River for two days of intense competition. There were 868 boats and 176 high schools from eight states (PA, NJ, DE, MD, TX, FL, VA, NY) and the District of Columbia competing this year.

This year's headline for the Barons was the Boys Senior Eight's remarkable journey to the finals. Beginning in a field of 33 boats, the Barons came in 4th in the time trials, thus making it to the semi-finals where they finished 2nd, qualifying for finals just 2 seconds behind the St. Albans boat that ultimately won gold. The Barons came in 5th in that extraordinary final race. Congratulations to Erik Holmvik (stroke), Michael Colella, Harry Holroyd, Sam Weiner, Nick van der Vink, Matt Dutko, Adam Schlesinger, Sam Murphy, and Matt Speck (coxswain).

Two other boats made it out of the time trials and into the semi-finals—the Girls Second Eight and the Boys Junior Eight—where they finished 6th and 4th respectively. In the Girls Second Eight were: Margaux Carle (stroke), Kate LaFranchi, Julia Vasquez, Sabina Gudmundsson, Tamsin Bradbury, India Scribner, Ruby Smith, Gyl Weisenfeld, and Maddy Turner (cox). In the Boys Junior Eight were: Shray Mittal (stroke), Rohan Mittal, Joel Rosenblum, Trevor Wind, Matt Baer, Nate Hodge, Ian Weaver, Alex Lallas, and Will Smith (cox).

In a field dominated by senior boats filled with, well, mostly seniors, our Girls Senior Eight, with only one senior, two juniors and six sophomores faced tough competition. Though they did not advance to the semi-finals, this strong boat has a great future. In this boat were: Sofia Arend (stroke), Amanda Litty, Katie Sampson, Lizzie Hook, Abby McIntosh, Charlotte Myers, Naomi Balodemas, Erin Walk, and Zena Wolf (cox).

The Barons Boys Lightweight Four also raced well in a very competitive field of boats, but was not able to make it to the semi-finals. In this boat were Alex Loomis, Fred Johnson, Matthew Whitstock, Joaquin Rodriguez, and Alex Sax (cox).

Though neither Freshman Eight made it past the time trials in their first Stotesbury appearance, all enjoyed the experience of competing in such an amazing event. In the Boys Freshman Eight were: Mitchell Broadwater (stroke), Peter Murphy, Aidan LaPierre, David Loungani, Jeremy Lartigue, Nolan Petty, Diego Wahl, Oliver Jenkins, and Nico Judge (cox). In the Girls Freshman Eight were: Molly Gibson (stroke), Vivian Vazquez, Caitlin Beakes, Mackenzie Zellner, Jessica Smith, Alexa Green, Natalie Rogers, Rachel Dick and Julia Maslin (cox).

Congratulations and many thanks to our dedicated team of coaches: Dan Engler, Hank McEntee, Jessica Swartz, Tom Schryver, Laura Thornhill & Megan Gordon, and good luck to our Varsity Boys and Girls First Boats, who will be traveling this weekend to SRAA National Rowing Competition this weekend on the Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey!

BOYS & GIRLS BRING HOME GOLD & SILVER from MD Championships!

Maryland High School Rowing Championships
Sunday, May 1, 2011 in Chestertown, MD

Varsity Boys Win Gold & Silver; Varsity Girls, Freshman Girls & Freshman Boys Win Silver!
The Barons treated fans to a spectacular day of racing at Sunday's Maryland Championship Regatta, held this year in historic Chestertown, on the picturesque Chester River.

After a false start, the Boys Varsity 8 never lost their focus, beating Whitman, St. Paul's, Walter Johnson and DeMatha to win gold. In this mighty boat were: Matt Speck (cox), Erik Holmvik (stroke), Michael Colella, Harry Holroyd, Sam Weiner, Nick van der Vink, Matt Dutko, Adam Schlesinger, and Greg Mariuzza.

The Girls Varsity 8 raced twice, first in a heat of five boats where they powered their way into first place, thus qualifying for the last finals race of the day, in which they came in fewer than 8 seconds behind Whitman and well ahead of the rest of the pack, to win silver. In this boat were: Zena Wolf (cox), Sofia Arend (stroke), Lizzie Hook, Katie Sampson, Amanda Litty, Abby McIntosh, Charlotte Myers, Naomi Balodemas, and Erin Walk.

The Boys Varsity 2nd 8 also won silver in a thrilling close final race. Whitman was in the lead by a couple of boat-lengths, and the Barons caught up in an exciting sprint to the finish in which they finished second by little more than a bow ball. Will Smith (cox), Shray Mittal (stroke), Sam Murphy, Rohan Mittal, Trevor Wind, Ian Weaver, Nate Hodge, Joel Rosenblum, and Alex Lallas are all looking forward to facing Whitman again at WMIRA Championships in 2 weeks.

Adding to an afternoon of exhilarating finals, the Girls 2nd Varsity 8 also won silver, coming from behind to power through 4 boats, one after another in the final 500 meters of the race. Just before the finish line, they pulled in front of Whitman, to finish second behind another Whitman boat. Earlier, the girls had raced in a qualifying heat in which they came in second, being sure to save their energy for this final race. In this boat were: Maddy Turner (cox), Margaux Carle (stroke), Kate LaFranchi, Tamsin Bradbury, Sabina Gudmundsson, Julia Vazquez, Ruby Smith, Gyl Weisenfeld, and India Scribner.

The Boys Freshmen Eight rowed in a dual with Whitman. Though Whitman won, these freshmen showed real improvement and were able to keep their strokes long and strong to close the gap. Racing in a new all freshman line-up for this boat were: Nico Judge (cox), Mitchell Broadwater (stroke), Nolan Petty, Diego Wahl, David Loungani, Aidan LaPierre, Peter Murphy, Jeremy Lartigue, and Theo Montgomery.

The Girls Freshmen Eight got off to a great start and held the lead in their race against Whitman and Roland Park Country School until the last 500 meters, when Whitman was able to sprint into first place. In this boat were: Phoebe Mejia (cox), Lexi Theiss (stroke), Vivian Vasquez, Caitlin Beakes, McKenzie Zellner, Molly Gibson, Jessica Smith, Natalie Rogers, and Rachel Dick.

The Girls Varsity also competed in two fours that had never before raced together. Though neither boat qualified for the finals, both pulled their hardest against teams that undoubtedly had more experience in fours racing. In the Girls Varsity Four were: Kate Lester (cox), Kate Waldmann (stroke), Emma Dauster, Taylor Joseph, and Rachel Brocker. In the Girls 2nd Varsity Four were: Elaina Gerrety(cox), Gena Bunker, Naomi Smith, Jacqueline Whitford, and Katharine Smith.

The Fours competition was tough in this regatta, and the Varsity and Novice Boys also rowed well, but were unable to get past their heats. In the Boys 2nd Varsity Four were: Alex Sax (cox), Alex Loomis, Fred Johnson, Matt Whitstock, & Joaquin Rodriguez. The Boys Novice Four had Nico Judge (cox), Matt Baer, Mishel Kisi, Srikanta Mehta, and Oliver Jenkins. They got off to a great start and were in first place until they caught a boat-halting crab—every rower's nightmare. They recovered well and still managed to beat one DeMatha boat by open water.

The other 13 schools competing in this regatta were: Bryn Mawr, DeMatha, Elizabeth Seton HS, Gunston Day School, Holton Arms, Institute of Notre Dame, Montgomery Blair, Notre Dame Prep, Roland Park Country School, St. Paul's School For Boys and For Girls, Walter Johnson, & Whitman.

Crown of Wisconsin Avenue Regatta

Crown of Wisconsin Avenue Regatta
Saturday, April 23,2011

Last Saturday's Crown of Wisconsin Avenue Regatta capped off a spring training week marked by crazy weather, culminating in the flooding of Washington Harbor. B-CC's athletes and coaches worked hard throughout the week, undaunted by Mother Nature, earning and deserving the beautiful and successful race day Saturday proved to be. B-CC raced against local crews from GDS, NCS, St. Albans, O'Connell, Sidwell, Washington-Lee, West Potomac, Whitman, & Wilson, winning several first, second & third place finishes in both heats and finals. This was a 2000-meter college-level racecourse, 500 meters longer than the usual high school course.

Regatta highlights included three first place wins:
The Girls Varsity Four had a beautiful race, coming in ahead of Washington-Lee, NCS, and GDS. In this boat were: Zena Wolf (cox) Katie Sampson, Lizzie Hook, Sofia Arend & Amanda Litty.
Boys 3rd Varsity Four rowed a spectacular race, beating St. Albans, Wilson and W. Potomac. In this boat were: Will Smith (cox) Alex Loomis, Fred Johnson, Matt Whitstock, & Joaquin Rodriguez.
In the Boys Novice Four were Nico Judge (cox), Diego Wahl, David Loungani, Jeremy Lartigue, & Theo Montgomery. This was the first time these novice boys had ever rowed together in a four, making it a particularly remarkable win!

The Barons very strong Boys Varsity Eight came in second, behind St. Albans, but ahead of Whitman and O'Connell in an exciting and very fast finals race. In this first boat was: Matt Speck (cox), Erik Holmvik, Michael Colella, Harry Holroyd, Sam Weiner, Nick van der Vink, Matt Dutko, Adam Schlesinger, & Greg Mariuzza.

The Girls Varsity Eight had a busy day of racing, with several girls rowing in multiple races. This boat (Zena Wolf, cox, Katie Sampson, stroke, Lizzie Hook, Sofia Arend, Amanda Litty, Abby McIntosh, Charlotte Myers, Naomi Balodemas, and Erin Walk) came in second in their heat, ahead of W. Potomac and O'Connell, but behind Whitman. In the last finals race of the day, this strong but exhausted boat fell to Whitman, NCS & Wilson.

The Girls 2nd Varsity Eight won their heat and then came in second, ahead of Wilson and W. Potomac, in a terrific finals race. The Barons were in the lead until the last 500 meters when Whitman pulled ahead in a final sprint to the finish. In this boat were: Maddy Turner (cox), Margaux Carle (stroke), Tamsin Bradbury, Julia Vazquez, Sabina Gudmundsson, Rea Marmarinou, Gyl Weisenfeld, Kate Waldmann and Rachel Brocker (raced in heat)/Erin Walk (raced in final).

The Boys 2nd Varsity eight also won their heat and then came in 3rd in their final race, behind St. Albans & Whitman, but beating O'Connell by several boat lengths. In this boat were: Caelan Collins (cox), Rohan Mittal (stroke), Sam Murphy, Shray Mittal, Trevor Wind, Ian Weaver, Joaquin Rodriguez, Joel Rosenblum, & Alex Lallas.

The Girls 3rd Varsity Eight brought three freshmen into its ranks in a very competitive heat, falling to Whitman, NCS, & Washington-Lee. In this boat were: Kate Lester (cox), Taylor Joseph (stroke), Emma Dauster, Gena Bunker, Alexa Green (9th), McKenzie Zellner (9th), Vivian Vazquez (9th), Jacqueline Whitford, & Katherine Smith.

The Boys Freshmen Eight faced a very competitive heat, falling to Washington-Lee, St. Albans, & Whitman in a tight race. Racing in this boat were: Nico Judge (cox), Mitchell Broadwater (stroke), Nolan Petty, Matt Baer, Mishel Kisi, Aidan LaPierre, Peter Murphy, Srikanta Mehta, & Oliver Jenkins.

According to several accounts from the boat, the Girls Freshmen Eight were winning their race until officials ordered the Barons (but not the other boats) to come to a complete stop due to another boat's lane violation and a potential collision. They lost their first place position, but not their determination, catching up to the other boats to finish just 2 seconds behind the pack, which included Whitman, W. Potomac, & Wilson. In this boat were: Julia Maslin, Lexi Theiss (stroke), Alexa Green, Caitlin Beakes, Vivian Vasquez, Molly Gibson, McKenzie Zellner, Natalie Rogers, and Rachel Dick.

This Sunday the team travels to Chestertown for the Maryland State High School Championships.

St. Andrew's School Noxontown Regatta

The crew team travelled to Middletown, Delaware on Saturday to race against some of the top crew programs in the country. In addition to St. Andrew's, the Barons raced against Chaminade HS (Long Island), Holy Spirit HS (NJ), Merion Mercy Academy (PA), Mount St. Joseph's Academy (PA), Walt Whitman HS, & West Springfield HS (VA). Conditions on Noxontown Pond, one of the finest 1,500 meter rowing courses in the country, were near perfect, something our team rarely experiences on the fickle, fast, and sometimes furious waters of the Potomac. All the B-CC boats rowed hard against some very fast and experienced boats. Just for reference and perspective, Chaminade, Holy Spirit, Mount St. Joseph's and Merion Mercy all won top medals in the finals at Stotesbury and Nationals in 2010. Almost all of these teams have also already had their intensive spring break training. Racing against such stiff competition is a terrific opportunity to learn lessons and get inspired to work hard. No doubt our Barons have emerged from this regatta determined and ready to get stronger and faster over spring break.

In the Women's Varsity 1st Eight, coming in fifth place, 10 seconds ahead of West Springfield, were: Zena Wolf (coxswain), Katie Sampson (stroke), Lizzie Hook, Sofia Arend, Amanda Litty, Abby McIntosh, Charlotte Myers, Naomi Balodemas, and Erin Walk.

The Men's Varsity 1st Eight also came in fifth, 12 seconds ahead of West Springfield, just 5 seconds behind Whitman. In this boat were: Matt Speck (cox); Nick van der Vink (stroke); Michael Colella, Harry Holroyd, Sam Weiner, Matt Dutko, Greg Mariuzza, Rohan Mittal, and Sam Murphy.

The Women's 2nd Varsity Eight came in fourth place, in an exciting sprint to the end finish, just 4 seconds behind Whitman and ahead of both St. Andrew's and West Springfield. In this boat were: Maddy Turner (cox), Margaux Carle (stroke), Kate LaFranchi, Tamsin Bradbury, Sabina Gudmundsson, Rea Marmarinou, Gyl Weisenfeld, Ruby Smith, and India Scribner.

The Men's 2nd Varsity eight also had a very exciting race, beating Whitman by 5 seconds to finish fourth. In this boat were: Alex Sax (cox), Adam Schlesinger (stroke), Nate Hodge, Shray Mittal, Trevor Wind, Joel Rosenblum, Fred Johnson, Alex Loomis, and Joaquin Rodriguez.

The Women's 3rd Varsity Eight also beat Whitman, coming in fourth, just 2 seconds behind Merion Mercy. In this boat were: Elaina Gerrety (cox), Julia Vasquez (stroke), Emma Dauster, Naomi Smith, Rachel Brocker, Gena Bunker, Sarah Katsnelson, Kate Waldmann and Katherine Smith.

The Men's Freshmen Eight had a great race, coming from behind to pass St. Andrew's and finish in 5th place, just 3 seconds behind Holy Spirit. Racing in this boat were: Nico Judge (cox), Mitchell Broadwater (stroke), Nolan Petty, Matt Baer, David Loungani, Jeremy Lartigue, Peter Murphy, Diego Wahl, & Theo Montgomery.

The Women's Freshmen Eight had a tough time in the first half of the race, but recovered well to finish in 6th place. In this boat were Phoebe Mejia (cox), Lexi Theiss (stroke), Vivian Vasquez, Molly Gibson, Alexa Green, Caitlin Beakes, McKenzie Zellner, Natalie Rogers, and Rachel Dick.

This Saturday the team is back racing at home on the Potomac.

Anacostia Regatta Report: Men's Varsity Crew Team Wins Trophy!

Anacostia Regatta
Saturday, April 2, 2011

Among the many highlights during Saturday's first crew regatta of the season were two first place finishes that bookended a terrific day of racing. First was the Men's Varsity Eight's spectacular first place finish against Gonzaga and DeMatha. Always a tough competitor, Gonzaga kicked in with a fast sprint in the final 300 meters of the race—but it wasn't enough. The B-CC boat held tight to their lead, finishing ahead by 8.53 seconds. Fans and team members gathered on the Anacostia riverbank erupted in cheers! In this powerful boat, winning back from Gonzaga the trophy at stake in this race were: Matt Speck, 11th (cox); Erik Holmvik, 10th(stroke); Michael Colella, 11th; Harry Holroyd, 12th; Sam Weiner, 11th; Matt Dutko, 11th; Greg Mariuzza, 12th; Nick van der Vink, 12th; and Sam Murphy, 11th.

The Varsity Men's team also fielded three boats in the fours races. In an extremely tight and exciting finish, the 1st Varsity Four (Matt Speck, cox, Erik Holmvik, stroke, Michael Colella, Harry Holroyd & Sam Weiner) pulled ahead of DeMatha, but was unable to pass Gonzaga in the end, finishing 2nd. The 2nd Varsity Four (Will Smith, cox, Rohan Mittal, stroke, Nate Hodge, Shray Mittal, and Sam Murphy) came in fewer than 10 seconds behind Gonzaga, finishing 3rd. The 3rd Varsity Four (Caelan Collins, cox, Alex Loomis, stroke, Fred Johnson, Matt Whitstock, and Joaquin Rodriguez) had a fantastic race, moving through Gonzaga in the final 300 meters to finish second behind DeMatha.

The Freshmen Men were elated after their strong finish in their first race ever. In the largest field of competitors of the day, racing against three Gonzaga boats and one DeMatha boat, the Barons placed third, ahead of Gonzaga's 3rd boat as well as DeMatha. In this boat were Nico Judge (cox), Mitchell Broadwater (stroke), Nolan Petty, Matt Baer, Mishel Kisi, Aidan LaPierre, Oliver Jenkins, Srikanta Mehta, and Peter Murphy.

In the last race of the day, the Women's Freshmen/Novice 8, racing their very first race ever, beat the Georgetown Visitation boat by open water! Congratulations to Julia Maslin (cox), Lexi Theiss, 10th (stroke), Vivian Vazquez, Molly Gibson, McKenzie Zellner, Jessica Smith, Stephanie Arsenault, Natalie Rogers, and Desiree Dinh.

Finally, and most importantly, on a day that began with ominous skies and cold temperatures, 60 rowers, 10 coxswains, 7 coaches and dozens of parents gathered to celebrate and cheer a terrific start to the 2011 season. Clouds gave way to some sunshine. Races were won. Races were lost. But spirits never lagged. Many thanks go to coaches Dan Engler, Hank McEntee, Jessica Swartz, Megan Gordon, Laura Thornhill, Tom Schryver, and Chris Graves.

Occoquan Challenge Fall 2010

The "Challenge" is an apt name for this race, rowed on a unique 3-mile (5000m) course on the Occoquan Reservoir in Fairfax, Virginia. Competitors raced on a fully buoyed course with several challenging turns. Halfway through the race, crews completed a wide quarter mile 180-degree turn to finish the final leg of the course. Unlike any other course, boats start and finish at the same location, giving spectators excellent viewing from several beautiful locations.

Coming in only 1 second behind the winning boat in a field of very competitive club boats, B-CC's Men's Varsity 1st Eight rowed a spectacular race, winning second place out of 11 boats! In this powerhouse eight were: Matt Speck (coxswain), Nick van der Vink (stroke), Greg Mariuzza, Harry Holroyd, Sam Weiner, Matt Dutko, Michael Colella, Erik Holmvik, and Sam Murphy.

Completing this very strong men's team were two more Varsity Eights, coming in 5th and 8th place, respectively. The Women's Varsity eights also raced well, finishing 4th, 6th, and 11th out of 12 boats, competing as the Men did, in a field of very competitive select club team boats. In the 1st Eight, finishing almost a full 2 minutes ahead of the rest of the field were: Nancy Htay (cox), Erin Walk (stroke), Lizzie Hook, Katie Sampson, India Scriber, Amanda Litty, Kate LaFranchi, Naomi Balodemas, and Stacia Odenwald. The 3rd Eight really came together and rowed a great race, finishing 6th. In this boat were: Zena Wolf (cox), Kate Waldmann (stroke), Tamsin Bradbury, Gena Bunker, Taylor Wade, Jacqueline Whitford, Sabina Gudmundsson, Kate Lester, and Sophie Rosenthal. In the 2nd Eight were: Elaina Gerrety (cox), Margaux Carle (stroke), Rea Marmarinou, Abby McIntosh, Gyl Weisenfeld, Hannah Silverman, Emma Dauster, Julia Vasquez, & Katherine Smith.

Women's Varsity Coach and rowing phenom Nancy Faigen also won her umpteenth gold medal in the Women's Master's Double Race. Congratulations to Coach Nancy!

This crew team is a joy to watch. Thanks to a winning combination of fabulous coaching, talented senior leadership, and determined juniors and sophomores with phenomenal potential, the team is looking stronger and more technically adept each and every race. No doubt this great start to the fall season is just a harbinger of more good racing to come!!

Our mighty rowing Barons will be heading to this Occoquan venue again on Sunday, October 17th for the Occoquan Chase. Come out and enjoy this scenic and exciting racecourse while cheering on our team! (See http://www.bccrowing.windwebworks.com/ for directions and details.) This is a great opportunity for parents and freshmen beginning the Introduction to Rowing Program to come out and see a race and learn about the sport!

Head of the Potomac - Fall 2010

The Crew Team's Fall racing season opened Sunday at the "Scullers Head of The Potomac", a beautiful 2.8-mile course down the Potomac River, beginning at Fletcher's Cove and ending at the Roosevelt Bridge. Unlike the Spring Sprints, when our Barons compete in 1500 meter races against other high schools, the fall "Head Races" are crew's equivalent of a cross-country race, requiring remarkable endurance, and pitting our crews against highly competitive composite club boats of top area rowers—not just single high schools.

Thanks to lovely conditions and six very strong Varsity boats (3 Men's eights and 3 Women's eights), rowing fans were treated to a lovely afternoon of racing and cheering, as the men took a spectacular 2nd, 12th, and 18th place finishes in a highly competitive field of 24 boats; and the women took 7th, 13th and 18th in a field of 24 as well.

In the First Men's Varsity 8 were: Matt Speck (cox), Nick van der Vink (stroke), Greg Mariuzza, Harry Holroyd, Sam Weiner, Matt Dutko, Michael Colella, Erik Holmvik, & Sam Murphy. In the Second Men's' Varsity 8 were: Will Smith (cox), Alex Loomis (stroke), Shray Mittal, Jabril Lam-Coleman, Nate Hodge, Adam Schlesinger, Matt Whitstock, Parker Lape, and Alex Sax. In the Third Men's Varsity Eight were: Caelen Collins (cox), Rohan Mittal (stroke), Alex Zellner, Ian Weaver, Fred Johnson, Joel Rosenblum, Joaquin Rodriguez, Alex Lallas, & Danny Brody.

In the First Women's Varsity 8 were: Zena Wolf (cox), Erin Walk (stroke), Lizzie Hook, Sofia Arend, India Scriber, Amanda Litty, Kate LaFranchi, Katie Sampson, & Stacia Odenwald. In the Second Women's Varsity 8 were: Maddy Turner (cox), Naomi Balodemas, Rea Marmarinou, Margaux Carle, Sabina Gudmundsson, Abby McIntosh, Gyl Weisenfeld, Julia Vasquez, & Katherine Smith. In the Third Women's Varsity 8 were: Ashley Rosales (cox), Hannah Silverman (stroke), Taylor Wade, Kate Waldmann, Tamsin Bradbury, Ruby Smith, Sophie Rosenthal, Jacqueline Whitford, & Emma Dauster.

Maryland State Championship 2010

On a day that initially called for rain showers, the sun and the Barons shone brightly! Competing in 13 events this past Saturday on the Patapsco River in Baltimore, the Barons brought home 3 First Place Championship Trophies, 3 sets of First Place Medals, 6 2nd place finishes, and one 3rd place finish. Congratulations to the Women's Varsity 8, Women's Varsity 4, and Men's Varsity 8, winners of 2010 Maryland State Championship Trophies! Members of the Women's Varsity 8 were Hannah Schreiber (cox), Sam Miller, Laura Valenstein, Blair Bradley, Emily O'Connor, Claire Galasso, Ella Kampelman, Zoe Newell & Isadora Kratchman. Members of the Women's Varsity 4 were Hannah Schreiber (cox), Sam Miller, Laura Valenstein, Blair Bradley, & Emily O'Connor. In the Men's Varsity 8 were Lucien Tessier (cox), Viktor Hainski, Brad Gerber, Matt Dutko, Gregory Mariuzza, Michael Colella, Nick Van der Vink, Sam Weiner, & Harry Holroyd. In this banner race day for the Barons, additional First Place Medals were awarded to the Women's JV 8, Men's JV 4 and Men's Freshmen 8. In the Women's JV8 were Zena Wolf (cox), Stacia Odenwald, AJ Parks, Sloane Fisher, Naomi Balodemas, Kate LaFranchi, Amanda Litty, India Scribner, & Hannah Silverman. Members of the Men's JV 4 were Matt Speck (cox), Viktor Hainski, Brad Gerber, Gregory Mariuzza, & Michael Colella. And in the winning Men's Freshman 8: Caelan Collins (cox), Joel Rosenblum, Trevor Wind, Eric Holmvik, Sean Maber, Shray Mittal, Jesse McNeill, Adam Schlesinger, & Eli Schwat. The Men's Varsity 4 finished second—by maybe a bow ball—in a race where it appeared that they had won, a scene replayed just one hour later in the freshmen women's 8 race. In the boat were: Lucien Tessier (cox), Matt Dutko, Nick Van der Vink, Sam Weiner, & Harry Holroyd. In an unfortunate incident involving start problems with two other teams & broken walkie-talkies in the officials' boat, the Men's Varsity Lightweight 4 was forced return to the starting line, having already raced well over 500 meters. Though this put them at a clear disadvantage, they still managed to finish strong, in third place. This boat's line-up included: Steven Yaffe (cox), Alex Loomis, Jacob Gersch, Matt Whitstock & Alex Sax. Finishing a strong second in the Women's JV 4 were Nancy Htay (cox), Irem Girmen, Elizabeth Giddings, Hannah Silverman & Maddie Kenton. Having lost to Whitman by open water when they last met, the Girls' Freshmen & Novice boats both had great rows, finishing a close second to Whitman, with the Freshmen 8 apparently crossing the line just tenths of a second behind. In the Women's Freshmen 8 were Maddy Turner (cox) Erin Walk, Rachel Brocker, Sophia Arend, Lizzie Hook, Margaux Carle, Sabina Gudmundsson, Ruby Smith & Emma Dauster. In the Women's Novice 8 were Elaina Gerrety (cox), Julia Vasquez, Tamsin Bradbury, Kate Waldmann, Taylor Joseph, Abby McIntosh, Naomi Smith, Taylor Wade & Katherine Smith. In the Women's Novice 4 races, both boats again came in second. In the "A" Boat were: Ashley Rosales (cox), Sophia Arend, Lizzy Hook, Jacqueline Whitford, & Sara Katsnelson. In the "B" Boat were: Maddy Turner (cox), Erin Walk, Rachel Brocker, Kate Lester & Sophie Rosenthal. The Men's Novice 8 also had a great race, coming in second with Genna Bunker (cox), Alessandro Lallas, Cian Freideberg, Jeremy Levitt, Fred Johnson, Parker Lape, Joaquin Rodriguez, Danny Brody & Andrew Cannard. Other schools at the regatta were: Bryn Mawr, DeMatha, Holton-Arms, Institute of Notre Dame, Notre Dame Prep, Roland Park Country School, Seton Hall, St. Paul's School for Boys, St. Paul's School for Girls, Walt Whitman, & Walter Johnson. ---- Addendum n the scramble to get out all the good news, I unintentionly left off the Men's 2nd Varsity 8's fantastic race results and left out Rea Marmarinou, who rowed in the Women's 2nd Varsity 8. The Mens' Varsity 2nd Boat was in an extremely tough competitive race with St. Paul's and Walt Whitman High School. They led for most of the race, but finished in 2nd place -- less than a second behind St. Paul's boat, but more than a boat length ahead of Whitman. The cox for the Mens' Varsity 2nd Boat was Will Smith, and rowers included Alex Hutchesson, Jabril Lam-Coleman, Ian Weaver, Sam Murphy, Alex Zellner, Alex Duncan, Rohan Mittal and Jacob Gersh. Another correction: Rea Marmarinou rowed in the Women's JV 8. Hannah Silverman was in the four.

Stotesbury 2010

Seven boats, 60 rowers, 8 coxswains, and a supporting cast of coaches and parents all traveled to Philadelphia for the 84th annual Stotesbury Cup Regatta last Friday and Saturday. The Stotesbury Cup Regatta is the world's oldest and largest high school rowing competition, with an estimated 5,500 rowers and 933 boats competing this year. B-CC was one of 189 high schools from across the nation invited to compete on Philadelphia's Schuylkill River in what many consider to be the most competitive and highly prestigious high school regatta in the country. The Barons' boats all rowed well and represented their school with pride and great team spirit. Congratulations one and all! Three boats—the Boys Senior Eight, The Boys Freshman Eight, and the Girls Freshman Eight all made it into the semi-finals—no small feat at this level of competition. The Barons' Boys Freshman Eight kicked off the first morning with a fantastic time trial, placing 11th out of 36 boats, thus qualifying for the semi-finals where they placed 5th in their heat. Making this impressive first appearance at "Stotes" were Erik Holmvik, Jesse McNeill, Adam Schlesinger, Trevor Wind, Shray Mittal, Nathaniel Hodge, Joel Rosenblum, Eli Schwat, Sean Maber & Jake Simon (cox). The Girls Freshman Eight also had a great race day, coming in 7th out of 40 boats in their time trial to qualify for the semi-finals, where they finished 4th in their heat, just fractions of a second behind rival Walt Whitman. Erin Walk, Rachel Brocker, Sofia Arend, Lizzie Hook, Margeaux Carle, Gyliane Weisenfeld, Ruby Smith, Emma Dauster, & Maddy Turner (cox) were in this boat. Competing in a large field of very strong schools, the Boys Junior Eight raced very well, but fell shy of making the semi-finals. Members of this boat were Jabril Lam-Coleman, Alex Zellner, Ian Weaver, Alex Duncan, Rohan Mittal, Cian Friedeberg, Alex Hutchesson, Sam Murphy, & Will Smith (cox). Racing in the Boys Lightweight Four were Alex Loomis, Jacob Gersh, Matthew Whitstock, Alex Sax, & Matt Speck (cox). This boat rowed extremely well, finishing very strong with its best race time of the year. The competition at Stotesbury is stiff, and the Girls Second Eight's time trial was no exception, with the Barons rowing well, but falling short of the semi-finals. Members of this strong boat were Naomi Balodemas, Stacia Odenwald, Amanda Litty, Kate La Franchi, Rhea Marmarinou, India Scribner, Ana Julia Parks, Sloane Fisher, & Zena Wolf (cox). The Boys Senior Eight finished 14th out of 42 powerful boats, thus qualifying for semi-finals in which they placed 6th in their extremely competitive heat, a finish made all the more impressive considering the fact that all the rowers are underclassmen. Harry Holroyd, Matt Dutko, Nick van der Vink, Sam Weiner, Bradford Gerber, Gregory Mariuzza, Michael Colella, Viktor Hainski, & Lucien Tessier (cox, and the only senior) were members of this impressive boat with a very bright future. In a heart-breaking finish, the Girls Senior Eight just missed making the semi-finals by one place or 3.12 seconds. This tight-knit boat with eight graduating seniors has had a fantastic run and is to be congratulated for their leadership and esprit de corps. In this boat were Samantha Miller, Emily O'Connor, Blair Bradley, Laura Valenstein, Ella Kampelman, Zoe Newell, Claire Galasso, Isadora Kratchman, & Hannah Schreiber (cox)
